Ukiah: A Movie Theater and a boatload of restaurants in walking distance
Ukiah is another remarkable California city with an Airport in walking distance to a large number of restaurants and an excellent movie theater. On a quiet July 4th in 2009 we stopped by to watch the recently released gangster movie Public Enemies.
After exiting the Airport, we turned right on State Street and walked about 30 minutes to the Regal Cinemas Ukiah Stadium 6. It was a straight shot with sidewalks the whole way. We noticed Mendocino Transit Authority bus stops but a brief look at the schedules indicated service is infrequent and available mostly on weekdays. But, fly-in visitors could use this to venture beyond walking distance from the airfield.
On the way back to the Airport we were looking for a place to eat and tried to get into a vegetarian restaurant, a taqueria, and the Bluebird cafe that has been written up elsewhere. However, they were all closed because of the Holiday. We were just about to give up when we spied someone working at the outside taco bar at the Chavez Market across the street from the Airport. Wandering over there, we found out they were open and were happy to whip up some burritos for hungry aviators. This was the first time we'd ever seen the California version of the hot dog stand that's commonly available back East. The food really hit the spot and was great preparation for our flight back home to San Carlos.
